What is a learning journey?
"The desk is a dangerous place from which to view the world." - John LeCarré
You're a leader. You've achieved remarkable results in your organisation and career. You have a stellar future ahead of you.
Yet, something inside you longs for more. Breathing space. Fresh stimuli. New ideas. Different perspectives. A sense of not just how to continue to be successful, but how to also make more positive social impact in the world.
"Leadership, like swimming, can not be learned by reading about it." - Henry Mintzberg
Learning Journeys are about going completely outside your normal environment. They're also about a profound exploration within.
They work on a number of levels:
Firstly, they bring together a set of diverse, ambitious and fascinating leaders. Imagine how differently an investment banker from Switzerland, an entrepreneur from Hong Kong, a CSR head from the US, a social entrepreneur from the UK and the CEO of a foundation in Germany might look at the same problem. What might be the learnings for you from those different perspectives?
Secondly, they are about learning from individuals and contexts that you would otherwise never get the chance to meet and be a part of. Those learnings are often surprising. What do you imagine you could learn from a tribal leader in Southern India who is coping with the challenges to her community of a world that is changing faster than it has ever changed before? How would you act if you were in her shoes? What would be your words of advice to her?
Thirdly, learning journeys are about self-reflection. When was the last time you truly took time for yourself? Not just to relax, but to really look within. To reconnect with the fire that drives you and the soul that is who you truly are. To reflect on the past and plan the future.
"Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything." - George Bernard Shaw
Learning journeys are an opportunity for change.
During your 6-10 day experience, you'll travel to a context you may have never experienced before, with at least a dozen diverse, inspiring leaders, to spend time with number of remarkable social entrepreneurs.
The learnings you'll get from the experience are rich, unexpected and dynamic. They will come from multiple sources: from the out-of-context environment; from the individuals you'll meet; from your fellow leaders; and from your own personal perspectives.
And the results are profound: new, actionable ideas for your work; a broadened vision; a renewed energy; a fresh sense of the contribution you can make to the world; new life-long friends and colleagues; and a greater connection to your potential as a leader.
